Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My wife has frequent bouts of divirticulitis, and is currently suffering from an onset. Her doctor has again prescribed both Ciprofloxacin HCL and Metronidazole to treat the infection. However, one or both of these meds make her extremely ill; nausea; horrible taste in her mouth; palpatations in her chest/esophogus area. She suspects the main culprit is the Metronidazole since it tastes so bad. Can she take just the Cipro to treat the divirticulitis, or is the Metronicazole essential to the treatment, as well?
It's probably Metronidazole. It's well known for causing taste disturbances and various gastrointestinal complaints. Unfortunately it's an essential part of the treatment for diverticulitis.
Moxifloxacin could probably substitute ciprofloxacin and metronidazole in many cases but it's not a 100% safe practice since some anaerobes may be resistant to it. Metronidazole is the indicated treatment for these pathogens.
Amoxicillin-clavulanate is another option for mild cases only. So in conclusion, Metronidazole which is the most likely cause of her symptoms, is a necessary part of the treatment.
You shouldn't try to change her regimen without her doctor's approval. You'd better talk with her doctor as soon as possible.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
